Despite this, she was always in good spirits. She tolerated the bootie her foster parents put on her leg to keep her cast dry whenever she went outside. She patiently endured the prohibition on activity beyond sedate walking for weeks on end. She allowed her foster dad to carry her up and down stairs for a time, and she was a great sport about her weekly trips to the vet for check-ups, even showing affection to the doctors. She became so comfortable with her cast that her foster dad nicknamed her "Stumpy" for the noise she made as she walked on tile. She learned quickly to play with toys, tried to eat just about any kind of food, and became fast friends with everyone in the foster home.

With help from folks like you, GreySave has become one of the largest greyhound adoption groups in California. Our placements so far this year are up 20% from last year. Of course, our growth brings increased expenses. In addition, we’ve taken in more dogs with serious injuries (mostly broken legs) this year. Close to 10% of the dogs we rescue now need extraordinary medical care averaging $2500. Repairing these injuries is our greatest expense: our $275 adoption fee covered less than 10% of Gracie's expenses, and covers only a little over a third of our expenses for each dog. Gracie, a small, dark brindle three-year-old, came off the Caliente track last year with a broken right rear leg. Her leg was repaired and a metal plate inserted to aid recovery. Fortunately Gracie's break was not as serious as some we see, but she still began life in retirement with a cast up to her hip. 
Five months after the first operation, Gracie had surgery again to remove the metal plate. Two months later she was cleared to run again. She was hesitant at first, but finally she got the idea that she could now run whenever she wants (see photo below)! She lives in Chino Hills with her adoptive mom Karen, and her greyhound pal Angel. Karen reports, “Gracie loves life and seems to think that every day is a new chance to live it to the fullest. Thank you, GreySave, for all you’ve done for my girl.”
